The True Cost: The Importance of Knowing

There's something special about knowing who touched your jewelry before it became yours. At Visible Interest, we support designers who make their living creating beautiful pieces of modern jewelry. Every time pieces sell, our indie jewelry designers are thrilled as it is so personal to them to share their creations with others.  These handcrafted, contemporary jewelry pieces are made with love by our independent jewelry designers, and it is our passion to support them and expose our customers to their latest works of art.

Over the years, there has been a growing movement to support more independent artists and small businesses, but a recent documentary called The True Cost brings to light how the clothing we wear and who makes the clothing is impacting not just the fashion industry but the world.

The True Cost explores the moral and social impacts of the fashion industry. When you see "Made in Cambodia" on a piece of jewelry that was purchased at a chain department store, have you thought about the worker behind that piece? Probably not. While the price of clothing has been decreasing for decades --human and environmental costs have grown exponentially.

The True Cost is filmed all over the word to expose the working conditions and environmental impact on various countries. The documentary explores the fashion runways along with the dark slums of developing countries whose workers put in long hours with little pay to make items for the fashion world. The movie features interviews with leading fashion influencers such as Stella McCartney, Livia Firth, and Vandana Shiva and exposes the public to an eye-opening pilgrimage into the lives of the people behind the clothing you wear.

This film definitely makes anyone who views it think twice about their fashion shopping habits and helps us solidify our our mission to support indie jewelry designers practicing their craft with ethical gems and metals right here in the U.S.
